I have been having a really hard time motivating myself to go to the gym. I just don’t want to go. Maybe it’s the weather. I don’t know.

Anyhow. I came across this comic about what different types of people are thinking about other people working out around them at the gym. It’s hilarious and I thought I’d share. It’s from one of my favorite web comics artist, The Oatmeal. Just a warning. Overcoming all or nothing 01/20/2012


I have a confession to make. I am a perfectionist.

Now, I know I don’t look like it. I need to lose 75 pounds and I could probably spend a little more time in the mirror before I leave for work in the mornings. Or, you know, at least make sure there aren’t any visible stains on my shirt.

I guess calling myself a perfectionist isn’t quite accurate. Really, I use the excuse of perfectionism to throw in the towel when I come up against any tiny setback or obstacle on my way to losing weight and getting healthy.

I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about. Here’s a couple of choice quotes from the voice in my head:

o You already ate that bag of chocolate this morning. You blew it. So it doesn’t matter what you do for the rest of the day, you big fat failure.

o You can’t make it to the gym today. The day is ruined anyway, so why bother even trying to eat right?

And on and on. Here’s a little nugget of truth, though: It takes 3,500 calories to gain a pound. I’ll pause for a moment to let that … uh … digest.

Come to mama, you big doughy ball of calories

That’s a lot of calories. I’m trying to eat between 2,000 and 2,500 calories a day (I’m fat, so I get to eat more and still lose weight. Woo!). So to gain a pound (a pound!), you have to eat more than an extra day’s worth of food.

Let’s be honest. I can probably plow through 3,500 calories in a day. Take me to the boardwalk at Ocean City, Maryland and I could probably do it in a couple of hours. (Mmmhhh … funnel cake. Mmmhhh …. saltwater taffy. Mmmmhhhh …. margaritas….. Oh, you’re still here. Uhhh, hello.)

Knowing that 3,500 calories makes one pound puts that 300-calorie screwup between breakfast and lunch in perspective. I’m not saying I can screw up every day. But one screwup, especially one that I can defuse quickly, shouldn’t ruin my whole week. And I’m going to focus on that the next time I’m feeling defeated about that doughnut that jumped into my mouth at work.

Human Guinea Pig*: Greek yogurt dip 01/16/2012

I was at the grocery store the other day, stocking up on fresh produce to nibble on during the week when I saw a new dip. No, not a dorky guy feeling up the out-of-season peaches! A new creamy concoction near the bags of mixed lettuce.

Now, if you know me at all, you’ll know I like dunking things into sauces. Apples in peanut butter, carrots and celery into spicy ranch, tortilla chips into warm, cheesy spinach artichoke dip,  chicken wings and (imagine me making Homer Simpson-like noises) ….

Ahem! OK, getting back to the topic at hand. The new dip. Yes. I’m a big fan of Marzetti’s southwestern ranch dip for my veggies, but it’s pretty high in calories.

So when I spied their new line of greek yogurt veggie dips called Otria, I was intrigued. With 60 calories and 2 grams of carbs for the spinach artichoke variety, it isn’t such a bad choice.

And it tastes pretty good, too. I tried it with the classic carrot sticks and also with some whole wheat pita triangles. There’s a definite tang that you get with greek yogurt, and it’s a little watery. I was a little weirded out by egg yolk and fish oil listed in the ingredients, too.

Rating: 3 stars out of a possible 4.

Cost: About $3 for an 8.75-ounce package, which has about 8 servings.

Cardio Now 01/01/2012

Getting up this morning, the first day of the my new gettin’ healthy plan, was rough. Oh man. I could have slept until noon and then headed out to a friend’s for brunch.

But that was the old me. And I couldn’t start the month by not adhering to my goal of 30 minutes of exercise a day. So I rolled out of bed, changed into gym clothes (which look suspiciously like my pajamas), strapped on some sneakers way and tried to make my bedhead hair less scary.

On my drive to the gym, I told myself I would do 45 minutes of cardio, maybe a little weight lifting. It, uh, didn’t work out that way. Nope. 5 minutes into the elliptical machine (henceforth known as ‘The Bitch’), I thought I was going to die. 10 minutes, I began praying for death. I made it 15 minutes and then switched to the bike. I lasted 15 minutes on that and then crawled back to the locker room to collect my jacket.

In short, it was an embarrassing showing. I have only been out of the gym for two months. It felt like I’d spent the last two years being carried around by servants.

Tomorrow will be easier, of course. And in 2 months, I can look back at this and laugh at how hard 30 minutes at the gym was.

I have to give credit, though. Beyonce’s Run the World (Girls) got me through today.

It’s 2012 and a time for new beginnings.

A little more than two years ago, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. I was 30 years old, and the news was devastating.

It wasn’t unexpected. I was more than 100 pounds overweight, got winded climbing more than two flights of stairs and regularly unhinged my jaw to inhale entire candy stores (not really, but it felt like it).

Surprisingly, the diagnosis has done little to change my eating habits. Oh, for a few months I counted carbs and went to the gym. And then I got angry because I couldn’t eat what I wanted to eat and I stopped. Yeah … that will show the diabetes!

Ignoring the problem (and dodging my doctor) didn’t make the diabetes go away. And I’m tired of feeling out of control.

So here’s to 2012, and chances to make a fresh start. Instead of some big, fat resolution that will be impossible to keep, I’m going to set two goals per month — all of them focused on developing those healthy habits that I’ll need to make major changes in my life.

The first two goals are relatively modest:

0 Stop eating fast food. It doesn’t really taste that good, I shouldn’t be spending my money on it, and it’s not helping my blood sugar levels

0 Exercising at least 210 minutes each week. This works out to 30 minutes a day, which is completely achievable.

Along with those, I’m hoping to get some friends involved with my getting healthy journey. In addition to making exercise and eating healthy more fun, letting other people in on my goals will help to hold me accountable.

So put on your bike helmet and get ready for the ride!
